Pass the Cider Please

An apple keeps the doctor away, but apple cider vinegar may keep your digestive system regular and aid  in minimizing a host of other unpleasant bodily functions such as constipation, high blood pressure and cholesterol, acne, and athletes foot. I have found that the consumption and use of apple cider vinegar can promote weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and help bring the body to a more alkaline state.

applecider vinegarApple cider vinegar is made from the fermentation process of apple cider. The sugar and the yeast are broken down into alcohol then later it becomes vinegar. It contains four types of acid, acetic, citric, malic and lactic.

A study done and reported in Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry reported that acetic acid may help lower blood pressure.  In another study cholesterol as well as  triglycerides were reduced.

Having a thyroid problem, my system isn’t as regular as I used to be so I drink 2 Tablespoons of unfiltered apple cider vinegar with 1 teaspoon of (local) honey in 1 cup of hot water.  Basically I drink vinegar tea a few mornings a week before breakfast.  I’ve also found that my cravings for sugar in the morning have decreased, so it’s balancing out my blood sugar, plus the alkalinity in my body is great.

Some Alternative Practitioners recommend AC Vinegar to restore alkaline acid balance to the body. The opposite of alkaline is acidic.  If our diet is high in acid producing foods, it affects our blood pH and can cause our body to produce excessive mucous, have allergic reactions and makes the body more pre-disposed to developing arthritis and gout. Other conditions which can result from high blood acidity are: irritability, sore throat, headache, anxiety….(sounds a bit like food intolerance doesn’t it) infections, including nasal and sinus.

I hate to admit this but after running over 400 miles last year, I contracted athletes foot.  It traveled from one baby toe and jumped the three in-between to nestle in on my big girl. It started to grow down my foot.  Because it was such a bad case, I gave in to temptation and marketing and went for what I thought were the big guns…..I bought creams and gels and powders and slathered and packed and dusted but nothing worked.  Finally I decided that I would go back to ‘being green’ and I sat on my kitchen counter with my foot in my sink-yes I sanitized BEFORE AND AFTER!! I proceeded to pour a solution of water and AC Vinegar 3:1 then I soaked my foot in it for several minutes.  Repeating this a few times a day, my athletes foot went away.  CHEAP and easy but stinky.

Apple Cider Vinegar is NOT a cure all and can have some negative effects if it is used unwisely.  Long term use can lead to low potassium levels and low mineral density which can lead to osteoporosis.  It is not recommended to be used with blood pressure medication or insulin because it can be like giving your body a double dose of medication.

Use caution to dilute when applying and consuming AC Vinegar as it can burn the skin and the stomach lining.  And of course if you have a food allergy to apples, please avoid AC Vinegar!
